Schools receive PE and sport premium funding based on the number of pupils in years 1 – 6. This funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to schools to be spent on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children. This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only spent on provision for PE and sport in schools. We will be held accountable for how we have used the additional funding to support pupils progress and participation in PE and school sport. In 2022 the Government will provide £320 million to eligible education settings for PE and sports premium.
All young people should have the opportunity to live healthy and active lives. A positive experience of sport and physical activity at a young age can build a lifetime habit of participation and is central to meeting the government’s ambitions for a world-class education system. Physical activity has numerous benefits for children and young people’s physical health, as well as their mental wellbeing (increasing self-esteem and emotional wellbeing and lowering anxiety and depression), and children who are physically active are happier, more resilient and more trusting of their peers. Ensuring that pupils have access to sufficient daily activity can also have wider benefits for pupils and schools, improving behaviour as well as enhancing academic achievement.
In the financial year 2021/22 the Link School received £12,417 in PE and Sports premium. This was added to the £8,711 underspend from 2020/2021. This underspend was due to the COVID 19 pandemic there and the limitations on the delivery of our Primary PE curriculum particularly where external providers / settings were planned to be involved. In line with DfE guidance we were able to carry forward this amount to 2021/22 with the condition that the underspend must be fully spent by July 2022. This gave the Link School £21,128 in PE and Sports Premium.
